More than 700 Nigerians were deported from Ghana in 2018 alone and that for reasons of alleged cybercrime and illegal stay, while 115, being part of the whole have so far been deported on the allegation of overstay and prostitution in the month of January 2019.
In view of this, the Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, Ambassador Michael Abikoye protested the inhuman treatment of Nigerians by the Ghana Immigration Service between a span of one year.
Abikoye condemned Ghana immigration officers actions at a meeting between him and the Comptroller-General of the GIS, Kwame Takyi, in Ghana, according to New Agency of Nigeria, NAN.
The high commissioner claimed that 723 Nigerians were deported on alleged illegal stay, cybercrime and prostitution between January 2018 and January 2019, while an additional 81 Nigerians were deported on other grounds.
Abikoye warned against inhuman treatment of Nigerians, saying that any ill treatment of Nigerians would not be acceptable to the Nigerian government. He also clarified that it is improper to deport Nigerians for alleged illegal stay in Ghana, since many Ghanaians in Nigeria are also committing the same of offences but are not deported.
He also alluded to the cordiality and the goodwill that exists between the two countries, stating that things have to change “because of the brotherliness between our countries.”
He gave some information in form of photos and other evidences of Nigerians who sustained injuries while been tortured. The CG claimed that GIS was compelled to take action due to conduct of some Nigerians in Ghana.
